Diagnosing Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence occurs when the bladder leaks urine during activities that put it under pressure. Activities such as coughing, laughing, lifting a heavy object, changing positions, or exercising can cause leaks. While this can be an embarrassing problem, Tranquility Products makes discreet urinary incontinence supplies that can let you live without fear.

 Diagnosing Stress Incontinence

How is urinary stress incontinence diagnosed?

While most adults can hold over 2 cups of urine in their bladders, stress incontinence occurs when the muscles that control that ability get weak or do not work. Weakened pelvic muscles can be caused by childbirth in women, prostate surgery in men, injury to the pelvic area in general and certain medicines. Sometimes there is no apparent cause at all. Even when the cause is unclear, stress incontinence is not just a symptom of age, but a true medical condition that should be checked out by a physician.

The Mayo Clinic’s diagnostic page on stress incontinencedescribes the types of tests that a doctor might use to diagnose urine leakage problems. Some common test types are as follows:

  • Urinary stress test ─ The doctor will ask you to cough while standing up to see if and how much you are involuntarily leaking urine.
  • Urine sample test ─ The medical professional will look for infection, traces of blood or other abnormalities to eliminate the possibility of an underlying issue.
  • Measurements of post-void residual urine ─ This text can be done via one of two methods:
    • A catheter is passed into the bladder and drains remaining contents so they can be measured.
    • A specialist may use an ultrasound scan to see an image of your bladder and its contents.
  • Measuring bladder pressures ─ In a process called cystometry, a catheter is used to fill your bladder slowly with warm fluid. Tests of your bladder leakage will be done during the filling to check for stress incontinence.

For some patients, the doctor might want to perform other more involved tests as well. Read the full list on theMayo Clinic incontinence tests and diagnosis page.
